Converting McCain Voters to Thompson Voters: One At A Time

At the Publix in Lexington, SC this morning, Snippy and I became engaged in a conversation in the checkout line. Eventually, the lady asked us for whom we were going to vote. We both immediately answered Fred Thompson. She stated that he was one of her choices too, the other being John McCain. Seeing the look of distaste on our faces with her answer, she asked "What's wrong with McCain?"

First I stated, that as a veteran, I respected McCain's service but he's totally wrong on his politics. When she asked us to elaborate, all we said was "McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman and the Gang of 14. He sponsors Bills with the most liberal Democrats. He supported amnesty and voted against the Bush tax cuts. He is not a Conservative". We then went on to explain why we liked Fred. She said she hadn't really thought about those McCain Bills and was really thinking about McCain because of his veteran status. She said that we had helped her make up her mind, she's going for Fred.

Whether she eventually does or not, we gave her something to think about by pointing out the differences between Fred Thompson and John McCain. Sometimes that's all it takes, just a little push by an enthusiastic supporter. We may have gotten one more vote for Fred, for us, that makes it a good day. Don't be afraid to voice your opinion about your candidate, you may change a mind and that's what "Grassroots" is all about.

If there's one thing we learn from history, it's that we don't learn from history.
